The Project location is Anjilithara, which is near Fort Cochin in the State of Kerala, INDIA. Anjilithara means "land of Anjil wood" and Anjil wood was traditionally used for the construction of fishing canoes and war canoes (snake boats). These traditional canoes are still made in Cochin today with planks of wood stitched together by coir (coconut fibre).
Named in honour of Michael Thykoottathil, the father of Mr T M Louis, one of the directors of Kondo Syokai Leisure India, "Michaels Land" is the name we have given to the site of The Gazelle Project. It is a beautiful 10 acre area projecting into the backwaters of Kerala and a short drive from Fort Cochin. Although utterly peaceful it is only a short boat ride to the main jetty of Ernakulam, the main business centre of Kerala and about 15 minutes to Fort Cochin. Michaels Land will be the base of further developments planned by Kondo Syokai Leisure India.
Fort Cochin is probably the most historic part of Kerala. It has been called the Queen of the Arabian Sea and Little Venice. It is the site of the first European settlements and the location of the original burial ground of Vasco Da Gama. As a result of this history there is a strong Latin Catholic heritage. There is so much on the web about Cochin and the Backwaters of Kerala that it is pointless to duplicate it here (Google on +cochin +backwater +kerala brought up over 4,000 links at the last time of checking) but let's just say it is worth a visit - especially if you also want to come and see the Gazelles! Fortunately Cochin has it's own international airport and the number of airlines using it is increasing.
